Two ways in. One window.

Dual-action steel tilt and turn windows tilt inward from the top for secure, weather-protected ventilation — or turn fully inward on side hinges for a full opening and easy interior cleaning. Every unit is custom fabricated to your exact opening on original European steel profiles.

Why Tilt & Turn Windows

One frame. Two functions.

Tilt and turn windows fold both ventilation and a full opening into a single sash. A single lever selects the mode — tilt for airflow, or turn for a wide-open swing — making them a favorite for bedrooms, upper floors, and anywhere egress and easy cleaning matter.

Secure Ventilation

Tilted from the top, the sash stays locked in place while allowing airflow — hard to force open from outside.

Full-Swing Access

Turned inward like a door, the sash opens completely for cleaning, moving furniture, or emergency egress.

Custom Fabricated

Every tilt and turn window is built to your exact dimensions, glazing specification, and finish.

How It Works

Two positions. One handle.

Turning the handle to a different position changes the entire way the window opens — no separate hardware or extra steps.

Handle Up

Tilt

The sash pivots inward from the bottom, hinged at the top corners, opening a narrow gap along the top of the frame — continuous ventilation with the sash still secured in the frame.

Handle Sideways

Turn

The sash swings fully inward on side hinges, like a door — the entire opening is clear for cleaning the exterior glass, moving large items through, or emergency egress.

Common Questions

Tilt & turn windows, answered.

The questions we hear most from homeowners, designers, and architects specifying steel tilt and turn windows.

A tilt and turn window has a single sash that opens two different ways from one handle. Turning the handle to the up position tilts the sash inward from the top for ventilation; turning it to the side releases the sash to swing fully inward like a door. Built on a steel profile, it combines that dual function with the slim sightlines and durability of traditional steel.

Tilt and turn windows are ideal for bedrooms and upper floors, where secure ventilation and an emergency egress path both matter, and for any window where you need to clean the exterior glass from indoors. They're also a strong choice for apartments and multi-story homes.

Yes. In the tilt position the sash remains captured in the frame at the
top and bottom, held by concealed hardware — it opens only a narrow gap
for airflow and is far more resistant to forced entry than a fully open
window.

Yes. Because the dual-action hardware adds weight and load to the sash, we typically specify the thermally broken W50-TB or Secco OS2 75 profiles for tilt and turn units, which combine the strength needed for the mechanism with an insulating barrier that reduces heat transfer and condensation.

Yes. Turned fully inward, the sash provides a clear opening approaching the size of the window itself, making it suitable as an emergency egress point where required by code — a key reason it's specified in bedrooms.

Every BlackFramed tilt and turn window is made to order — never from stock sizes. Dimensions, hardware, glazing, and finishes are all specified to suit your architectural intent and performance requirements, then fabricated to approved shop drawings.
