Real steel, or a steel-look?
The black-grid, slim-frame look is the defining fenestration aesthetic of this decade — and much of what's sold today as steel-style is actually aluminum styled to resemble steel. That's not a scandal. But the two materials are genuinely different, the differences are visible and tactile, and you deserve to know which one you're paying for. Here's the comparison, without the sales gloss from either side.
The Structural Fact
Steel is three times stiffer than aluminum.
That single property is the origin of the entire aesthetic. Because steel can carry large glass with very little material, it produces the slender mullions and fine grids the style is famous for.
Aluminum, being less stiff, needs more material to do the same structural job — so an aluminum system spanning the same opening runs visibly thicker profiles. The frames grow, the grid coarsens, and the "slim" look gets less slim exactly where you wanted it most.
On modest windows the gap narrows and aluminum replicas can look convincing. At scale — the glass wall, the oversized pivot door, the two-story stair window — steel is the material actually drawn in the picture you saved.

Here aluminum advocates have a fair point, so let's make it fairly. Modern thermally broken aluminum performs well — premium systems with wide thermal breaks and good glazing meet stringent codes, and the best European systems reach Passive-House-level numbers. Aluminum is also more naturally corrosion-resistant, a genuine advantage on the coast.
But steel holds its own: as a raw material it's inherently about five times more thermally resistant than aluminum, and modern thermally broken steel satisfies IECC targets in cold climate zones.
The performance question in 2026 isn't "which metal." It's whether the specific system is thermally broken, and what its certified whole-unit U-factor is. Demand that number from both camps and compare like for like.
Longevity & Provenance
The originals are still operating.
Steel windows have a hundred-year service record — units from the 1920s and 30s still open today, and are restorable when they aren't. The style you're buying is the steel style; the aluminum version is a tribute.
Quality aluminum lasts decades too. It simply doesn't have the same century of evidence, and it can't be restored the way welded steel can — damaged aluminum extrusions get replaced, not repaired.
The caveat steel owes you in return: that longevity is conditional on the finish. Galvanized, primed, and properly top-coated steel shrugs off weather for generations — so when you buy steel, get the coating process specified in writing.
Price, Honestly
Where the calculus shifts.
Steel-look aluminum typically costs meaningfully less than true steel — that's its core value proposition, and for many projects it's decisive. The honest question is what the opening asks of the frame.

The grid is the look. Whether the muntins truly divide the glazing — or are applied to the surface — changes both the appearance and the price.
