Every BlackFramed pair is fabricated to your exact rough opening — there are no stock sizes. Beyond roughly ten feet of width, a swinging pair gets heavy to operate and we'll usually point you toward a sliding or folding system instead. Shop drawings are approved before anything is cut.

The active leaf is the one you use every day — it carries the handle and lock. The passive leaf stays fixed by flush bolts at the head and sill, and is released only when you want the full width open. On an equal pair either leaf can be specified active; on an unequal pair the wider leaf is active.
Once an opening passes about 42" wide, a single leaf becomes heavy and needs a lot of floor to swing. Splitting it into a pair keeps each leaf light, halves the swing radius, and gives you a symmetrical look — plus the option to open the whole width when you need it.
Pairs can swing in or out, and we set the active leaf to whichever side suits your traffic and furniture. Exterior pairs usually swing inward for weather sealing and security; interior pairs are often set to swing into the larger room. We confirm handing on the shop drawing before fabrication.
Yes. Exterior pairs are built on thermally broken systems (W40, W50-TB or Secco OS2-75) with a full perimeter of weather seals, a rebated meeting stile, and multi-point locking on the active leaf into the head and sill. The passive leaf locks to the frame with shoot bolts.
Both. A transom is a fixed glazed panel above the pair that adds height and light; an arched head is a radiused top fabricated to your specified curve. Because everything is made to order, the two leaves can also be flanked by fixed sidelites to read as a full glazed opening.
No fixed mullion — the leaves meet at a slim astragal (meeting stile) that closes against the active leaf. When both leaves are open the opening is completely clear from jamb to jamb, which is the main reason to choose a pair for moving furniture or entertaining.
