Why a Pivot

Where a hinged leaf carries its full weight on the jamb, a pivot balances the door on a spindle at the floor and head. The load moves to the structure — so the door can be enormous and still glide.

Pivot doors are typically operated with full-height pull bars or recessed pulls rather than conventional levers. Hardware is selected to complement the scale of the opening while the pivot mechanism remains completely concealed.
Full-Height Pull Bar
A vertical bar that runs the height of the leaf — the natural way to move a large pivot, and the detail that defines the entrance. Specified in matte black to match the frame, in custom lengths on request.
Minimal Lever
A clean knurled lever and escutcheon, for openings where a conventional latch set is preferred over a pull.

Every BlackFramed pivot is fabricated to your exact rough opening — there are no stock sizes. The pivot box is sized to the finished weight of the leaf, and the threshold and head are detailed to conceal the spindles. Shop drawings are approved before anything is cut.

A hinged door swings on hinges fixed to the jamb, so the side of the frame carries the entire weight. A pivot rotates on a spindle set into the floor and head, so the load transfers to the structure above and below. That single change lets a pivot leaf be much taller, wider, and heavier while still opening under one hand.
Much larger than a swing door. Single pivots commonly run 42″ to 60″ wide and up to 132″ tall, and oversized leaves reach 72″ wide and 168″ tall or beyond. The limit is the engineered capacity of the pivot box and the structural head — both of which we specify to your finished leaf weight.
No. The floor spindle and the top pivot are recessed into the threshold and the head, hidden from view. There are no surface hinges on the jamb — the only visible hardware is the pull or lever, so the frame reads as an uninterrupted line of steel.
A center pivot turns through the middle of the leaf for the most dramatic, sculptural motion, but part of the opening is always occupied by the swinging half. An offset pivot places the axis a few inches in from the edge, giving you near-full clear passage while keeping the effortless balanced swing. Offset is the more practical choice for a working entrance; center pivot is favored for statement openings.
Yes. Exterior pivots are built on thermally broken systems — W40, W50-TB, or Secco OS2-75 — with full-perimeter seals and a concealed drop-seal at the sill. Detailing an exterior pivot for weather and thermal performance is more involved than a standard door, which is exactly why it is engineered and drawn before fabrication.
They are a natural fit. Galleries, boutiques, restaurants, and lobbies use pivots for a wide, welcoming entrance that handles constant traffic. For commercial work we specify heavier pivot boxes and can integrate overhead closers, access control, panic hardware, and ADA-compliant operation to meet code.
