Steel, or iron?
Search for a metal entry door and you'll find two worlds that barely acknowledge each other — ornamental iron with scrollwork, and modern steel with slim grids and clean geometry. They're often lumped together. They are, in practice, different products, built differently, for different architecture. Here's the honest comparison, written by people who build only one of them.
First, The Materials

Wrought iron is nearly pure iron with very low carbon — soft enough to hand-forge into scrolls and curves. Steel is iron alloyed with more carbon, which makes it harder, stronger in tension, and better suited to precise, machine-formed profiles.
So the two aren't just different looks. They're different metals, worked in fundamentally different ways — one shaped by hand for ornament, the other engineered to tolerance for line.

Ornamental doors are heavy and often hand-built — part of the charm, and occasionally part of the problem: more weight on hinges, more variance unit to unit.
